THE COMFORT OF THINGS
2017
Theatre
Final Stage Research & Development
I was just starting my third year at university when, through no fault of my own, my partner and I found ourselves homeless. It was a difficult year to be sure, but I was safe on the floors and sofas of my friends, I was even able to keep up my degree. I came to realise, however, that even in this safe situation people started to see me differently, and so did I.
Using his personal experience with homelessness as a launchpad for further discussion Andrew explores the myriad of misnomers that proliferate the public consciousness astounding homelessness. A “tragic yet funny” performance on a theme “of unbelievable importance”, this honest, from the heart, solo-performance will have you seeing the streets of your home anew.
Developed from personal biography and drawing heavily on Daniel Miller’s Stuff & The Comfort of Things, it explores the anthropological nature of the home as a status symbol instead of necessity.
